Asagba Intervenes In Delta NURTW Leadership Crisis

Traditional Ruler Seeks Peaceful Settlement
THE Asagba of Asaba, Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has called for calm and dialogue as tensions emerge over a leadership dispute within the Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The monarch made the appeal during a courtesy visit by the state chairman of the union, Francis Ariyo, and members of his executive committee at the royal palace in Asaba.
The visit provided an opportunity for union leaders to formally present the dispute to the traditional institution and seek intervention before the situation escalates.
Commendation for Peaceful Approach
In his remarks, the Asagba praised the union for choosing a peaceful path in handling the matter.
He noted that the NURTW has played an important role in maintaining order and coordination among transport operators in Asaba Kingdom, describing the organisation as a critical part of the local economic structure.
The monarch encouraged the union leadership to remain committed to dialogue, adding that peaceful conflict resolution would protect the reputation and stability of the organisation.
Dispute Over Branch Leadership
During the meeting, Ariyo explained that the crisis arose following the refusal of Chief Nwosisi to hand over leadership of the Asaba branch to the newly elected chairman, Ogbueshi Dumebi Oduah.
According to him, the tenure of the former leader had exceeded the constitutional limit of two four-year terms as stipulated in the union’s rules.
Ariyo warned that failure to resolve the issue could heighten tensions within the union and potentially disrupt transport operations if left unchecked.
Palace Mediation Plan
Responding to the concerns, the monarch assured the delegation that the palace would take steps to mediate between the parties involved.
He directed Sylvester Ngungu, the branch chairman of the union, to collaborate with Ebeodi Anthony Eluaka to arrange a meeting with Chief Nwosisi so that he can present his position before the palace.
The Asagba stressed that all parties must respect the invitation, warning that failure to honour it could attract both traditional sanctions and constitutional consequences.
Emphasis on Unity and Inclusiveness
Beyond the immediate dispute, the monarch advised the union to avoid actions that could create division within the organisation.
He reminded the leaders that Asaba has historically welcomed people from different backgrounds, including those from across the Niger River.
Maintaining that inclusive spirit, he said, would help preserve peace within the kingdom and strengthen cooperation among residents.
Appreciation and Goodwill
Also speaking during the visit, Ngungu informed the monarch of his recent inauguration as NURTW South-South Auditor.
He thanked Ariyo for supporting his emergence and expressed appreciation to the monarch for his fatherly guidance.
The meeting ended with the Asagba invoking the blessings of Ani Ahaba upon the union leadership and urging them to continue promoting peace and responsible leadership within the transport sector.
