ASABA was filled with excitement on Saturday as the maiden 10km Asaba International Road Race kicked off at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, drawing more than 4,000 athletes from Nigeria and abroad. The race was officially flagged off by the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, who conceived and funded the event.
Addressing runners, officials and sponsors, the Asagba described the race as more than a sporting contest—highlighting it as a celebration of unity, resilience and Asaba’s growing reputation as a centre for sports, culture and tourism. He noted that hosting an international event of this scale reinforces the city’s commitment to healthy living and global visibility.
Chairman of the Asaba Sports Committee, Wing Commander Peter Iweze (rtd), said the race followed a successful 5km fitness walk that helped build enthusiasm and community participation. He praised the monarch’s vision and investment in using sports to promote youth development and showcase Asaba to the world.
Race Consultant Moses Nwanze confirmed the massive turnout of athletes from across Nigeria and beyond, underscoring the event’s potential to elevate Asaba’s sporting profile.
In the elite category, Plateau State’s Ishmel Sadjo and Kenya’s Florence Watetu Wachira each won the $5,000 top prize, while Asaba-born runners Promise Ogbolu and Ogochukwu Gwam earned ₦300,000 each.
