Anambra 2025: Court Bars Moghalu From Labour Party Governorship Race
By GLORIA UGOBA
The Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has issued an interim order barring Chief George Moghalu from parading himself as the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025 Anambra State election.
The order, delivered under Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/226/2025, followed two ex parte applications filed by members of the Labour Party’s Interim State Executive Committee led by Hon. Peter Okoye and Jerry Nnubia, both loyalists of the Senator Nenadi Usman–led National Caretaker Committee.
In her ruling, Justice Nwaukwa Ukamaka held that only the Chukwunulu–Nnubia faction possessed the legal authority to produce the party’s governorship candidate for the forthcoming election.
The court based its decision on an earlier Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which removed Barrister Julius Abure as the Labour Party’s National Chairman and recognised Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate leader of the party.
The apex court had also declared that all actions taken under Abure’s leadership—including candidate nominations and endorsements—were null and void.
Since Moghalu’s candidacy emerged from the Abure faction, the Federal High Court ruled that it lacked legal validity.
Political observers described the ruling as a major setback for Moghalu’s governorship ambition.
“You cannot build something on nothing and expect it to stand,” said a political analyst in Awka. “The law has spoken twice — first at the Supreme Court and now at the Federal High Court. For Moghalu, legally speaking, the road ends here.”
The ruling has thrown the Labour Party in Anambra State into fresh uncertainty, with party loyalists and supporters awaiting the next move from both factions.
