Anambra 2025: Court Bars Moghalu From Labour Party Governorship Race
THE political atmosphere in Anambra State has been thrown into fresh uncertainty following a ruling by the Federal High Court in Enugu, which stopped Chief George Moghalu from parading himself as the Labour Party (LP) Governorship candidate in the November 8, 2025 election.
The court’s decision, delivered under Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/226/2025, issued an interim order restraining Moghalu from presenting himself as the party’s flagbearer.
The ruling came after two ex parte applications filed by members of the party’s Interim State Executive Committee led by Hon. Peter Okoye and Jerry Nnubia, loyalists of the Senator Nenadi Usman led National Caretaker Leadership.
Justice Nwaukwa Ukamaka, who presided over the matter, held that only the Chukwunulu, Nnubia faction had the legal authority to produce a Governorship candidate for the Labour Party in Anambra.
The decision was anchored on an earlier Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which removed Barrister Julius Abure as LP’s National Chairman and transferred leadership to Senator Nenadi Usman.
The Apex Court had declared all actions taken under Abure’s leadership including candidate nominations and endorsements null and void.
Because Moghalu’s candidacy originated from the Abure faction, the Federal High Court ruled it had no legal foundation.
Observers say the judgment is a major setback to Moghalu’s political ambition.
“You cannot build something on nothing and expect it to stand,” said a political analyst in Awka. “The law has spoken twice first at the Supreme Court and now at the Federal High Court. For Moghalu, legally speaking, the road ends here.”
