AMNESTY International Nigeria has delivered a strong rebuke of the Federal Government, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to protect citizens amid a surge in bandit attacks, mass abductions, and deadly raids across the country.
In a statement posted Monday on its official X handle, the human rights organisation said armed groups are operating with increasing confidence and impunity, storming communities, kidnapping residents, and displacing thousands without effective government pushback. It warned that attacks and abductions have become “a daily routine” under an administration whose security strategy remains “grossly inadequate.”
According to the group, the persistence and brutality of recent assaults point to a “catastrophic failure of governance.” It criticised the government for lacking the political will to curb the violence, noting that suspected perpetrators are rarely arrested or prosecuted. As a result, victims and their families are left without justice or compensation.
“In many rural communities, only the graveyards are expanding daily,” the organisation said, stressing that impunity has emboldened armed groups across several states.
Amnesty International also expressed alarm over renewed attacks linked to Boko Haram, Ansaru, Lakurawa, Mamuda, and other armed factions. It argued that current security measures are ineffective and urged President Tinubu to take immediate, decisive action to reverse the worsening insecurity.
The group insisted that the government must honour its constitutional and human rights obligations to protect Nigerians and ensure justice for victims, warning that continued inaction will further deepen the country’s security crisis.
