Akwa Ibom Launches Ibom CNG Bus Terminal

Ibom CNG Bus Project Takes Off
THE Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Umo Eno, has officially flagged off the Ibom Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) City Bus Terminal in Uyo, marking a major milestone in sustainable transportation and urban development. Situated at Obio Offot and Ikot Akpe, the site was once abandoned and notorious for criminal activities. Governor Eno said the project would transform it into a secure, world-class mass transit hub.
Statewide Connectivity and Cashless Operations
The initiative will link all 31 local government areas, using newly paved roads for reliable transportation. Governor Eno announced that 50 luxury CNG buses have been procured and will operate a cashless ticketing system via bus cards. “All 50 buses have been paid for and will start arriving from April,” he stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to development and service delivery.
Sustainable Energy and Federal Collaboration
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, praised the project as aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on sustainable energy. “This initiative reduces dependence on petrol, lowers transport costs, and adds value to Nigeria’s gas ecosystem,” he said. Local government leaders also commended the collaboration with the federal government.
Training and Completion Assurance
The 62,000-square-metre facility will host a technical college to train drivers, mechanics, and engineers. Contractor Alpha Dias and Delivery Adviser Orman Esin assured timely delivery, promising completion within six months. Commissioner for Transport, Anthony Luke, called it the first terminal of its kind in Africa and the 21st century globally.
