Akwa Ibom Holds Village Heads Accountable for Vandalism
Village Leaders on Notice
GOVERNOR Umo Eno has issued a stern warning to village heads in Akwa Ibom State, stating they will be held accountable for any destruction of government property within their domains.
Speaking to newsmen at Government House, Uyo, the governor underscored the potential consequences, saying certificates of recognition for village heads would be revoked if public infrastructure was vandalised.
“This measure is intended to ensure that village heads take active responsibility for safeguarding government assets,” Eno explained.
Tackling School Vandalism
The governor lamented that well-equipped public schools and other facilities have often fallen victim to hoodlums and vandals, undermining government investments and community development efforts.
In response, he directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Frank Archibong, along with Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, ALGON Chairman, to organise a meeting with village heads to communicate the new measures and expectations.
The initiative is part of a wider push to instil discipline, accountability, and civic responsibility at the grassroots level, ensuring that public property is protected for current and future generations.
Community Engagement and Vigilance
Governor Eno also urged residents to actively protect public property, stressing that community involvement is essential. He highlighted that safeguarding schools, water facilities, and other public assets is a shared responsibility.
Mini Water Projects to Boost Access
The governor further announced plans for mini water projects in each ward of the state, to be supervised by the Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Committee. His personal assistants will also be involved in monitoring progress and ensuring effective delivery.
Through a combination of accountability for traditional leaders, community vigilance, and infrastructural projects, the state government aims to strengthen the protection of public assets while enhancing quality of life for residents across Akwa Ibom.
