Minister Praises Warri North Chairman For Local Government Achievements
The Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, has praised Hon. Smart Asekutu, Chairman of Warri North Local Government Area in Delta State, for showing the positive impact of local government in Nigeria.
The commendation came during an official visit to Koko, the council’s headquarters. The visit was part of a nationwide review of the work being done by local councils across the country.
Representing the minister, Engr. Kayode Adebayor said the purpose of the visit was to show Nigerians how local governments are improving lives through good leadership and useful projects.
He added that local councils need to prove their value by using funds well and focusing on the real needs of the people. According to him, this is key to keeping the local government system strong and effective.
In his response, Hon. Asekutu welcomed the minister’s team and described the visit as timely and important. He said the visit would help highlight the progress made by his administration in a short period.
He explained that most of Warri North is a riverine area, which makes development work more difficult. Despite this, he listed several projects his team has completed. These include a staff restaurant, a new 100KVA generator, a passport boat with a 200-horsepower engine, and electrification and environmental improvement projects.
Hon. Asekutu also thanked Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, for his support and for including all parts of the state in his development plans. He pointed out that the ongoing Koko-Ogheye road project will help connect rural communities to cities and boost trade with other states. He said the road will also create jobs and attract banks and businesses to the area.
He prayed for continued success for the minister’s efforts to promote the role of local governments both in Nigeria and globally.
The event was attended by key council officials, including the Vice Chairman Hon. Solomon Milkie, Secretary to the Local Government Samuel Meyiwa Khalil, Supervisor for Health Hon. Jacob Atirene, Head of Personnel Management Chief Daddy Amudo, Head of Works Department, and the NULGE Chairman.
