Agency Calls On Government Institutions, Private Sector To Embrace Biotech
THE National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has called on government institutions, organisations, the public and private sectors to embrace biotechnology.
It described biotechnology as one of Nigeria’s greatest assets for national security and sustainable development.
Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, the Director General made the call in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Agency, Mrs. Toyin Omozuwa, on Monday in Abuja.
The D-G said that institutions and others should see biotechnology not only as driver of development, but a pillar of Nigeria’s resilience and security strategy.
He explained that modern security was no longer defined solely by weapons or borders, but by safeguarding the nation against food insecurity, health emergencies, industrial vulnerabilities, and environmental threats.
“When food systems are unstable, nations become vulnerable to unrest.
“By investing in resilient crops, sustainable farming practices, and innovative biotechnological solutions, we are proactively preventing crises and strengthening national stability,’’ he said.
Mustapha disclosed that NBRDA was applying biotechnology across key areas of national security including food security.
He added that the agency was developing improved crop varieties that would ensure safe, nutritious food and strengthen farmers’ productivity.
The NBRDA boss said that biotechnology was vital to health security, pointing to NBRDA’s efforts in strengthening local capacity for vaccines, therapeutics, and rapid diagnostics.
“These initiatives will reduce dependence on imports and enhance Nigeria’s preparedness against pandemics and other health threats,“ the D-G said.
Also, Mustapha said that the agency was advancing bio-economy through renewable energy innovations and waste-to-value technologies.
According to him, these solutions will enhance energy security, create sustainable alternatives, generate jobs, and mitigate economic vulnerabilities.
“Biotechnology is a vital force shaping Nigeria’s resilience: from our farms to hospitals, our industries to our environment, it strengthens every sector with innovation and foresight.
“As global challenges intensify, it is imperative that we harness its full potential to secure our nation’s future,” he said.
The D-G reaffirmed NBRDA’s commitment to fostering innovation and building partnerships that would place Nigeria at the forefront of biotechnology in Africa.
Mustapha said, “with national safety as its priority, the agency is strengthening food systems, healthcare, and industrial resilience to safeguard the country against emerging threats.’’
Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that involves the integration of natural sciences and engineering sciences.
