AFCON Fallout Deepens: Senegal Face Possible Tournament Exclusion

CAS Decision Could Reshape Senegal’s AFCON Future
SENEGAL could face exclusion from the next Africa Cup of Nations if the Court of Arbitration for Sport upholds a controversial ruling by the Confederation of African Football over the 2025 final.
The dispute stems from the dramatic conclusion of the 2025 AFCON showpiece, where Senegal were deemed to have abandoned the match. Following an appeal, CAF’s Appeal Committee awarded a 3–0 victory to Morocco national football team, effectively handing them the title.
Threat of Further Sanctions
Beyond the loss of the trophy, the implications for Senegal could be far more severe. Under Article 59 of AFCON regulations, a team found guilty of forfeiting a match may face additional disciplinary action, including suspension from future editions of the tournament.
If CAS affirms CAF’s decision, the Teranga Lions could be barred from the next AFCON, dealing a significant setback to one of Africa’s top footballing nations. Such a sanction would disrupt Senegal’s competitive momentum and long-term planning on the continental stage.
Awaiting a Defining Verdict
Senegal are expected to continue their legal challenge, hoping to overturn the forfeiture ruling and avoid further punishment. However, the final outcome now rests with CAS, whose decision will be binding.
For now, uncertainty hangs over Senegal’s immediate future in African football, as players, officials, and fans await a verdict that could redefine the team’s standing in continental competition.
