AFCON 2025 Controversy Escalates As Senegal Appeals To CAS

Senegal Refuses to Accept CAF Decision
THE Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) has formally rejected the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board that awarded Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. In a statement issued on 17 March 2026, Senegal’s football authorities described the ruling as “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable,” confirming plans to take the dispute to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.
CAF had awarded the final as a 3–0 victory to Morocco following a forfeiture ruling against Senegal, citing misconduct during the controversial final. The Appeal Board invoked Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, which cover player and team conduct and match forfeiture.
Controversial Final Reassessed
The 2025 final, originally won by Senegal 1–0 in extra time, was overshadowed by a VAR-awarded penalty for Morocco late in regulation. Senegal players protested by temporarily leaving the pitch, leading to a chaotic scene that drew widespread criticism from officials, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
CAF’s Appeal Board overturned an earlier decision by its Disciplinary Committee, stating that Morocco’s “right to be heard had not been respected” in the initial proceedings. This procedural flaw prompted a full reassessment of the case, ultimately going against Senegal.
CAS Legal Battle Looms
Senegal’s federation has stated it will escalate the matter to CAS “as soon as possible,” emphasizing the protection of the “rights and interests of Senegalese football.” Should CAS accept the case, the dispute could move from CAF’s internal jurisdiction to the international sports arbitration stage, a process that has historically altered high-profile football rulings.
The legal challenge underscores concerns about governance, fairness, and disciplinary consistency in African football. For Senegal, the case is about more than just the lost title—it is a fight for integrity, credibility, and the precedent the ruling sets for future tournaments.
What’s Next?
For now, Morocco remains the official champion under CAF’s ruling. But the final chapter of AFCON 2025 may be decided not on the pitch but in a courtroom, with CAS’s arbitration determining whether the controversial ruling stands or is overturned.
