Uzodimma Tasks Editors On Electoral Integrity Ahead Of 2027 Polls
IMO State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has challenged Nigerian editors to take responsibility for promoting electoral integrity and national cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Abuja at the 2025 All Nigerian Editors Conference (ANEC), the governor said the media must recognise its powerful influence in shaping how Nigerians perceive elections, trust institutions, and sustain democracy.
Uzodimma, who delivered the keynote address titled “2027: Editors as Catalysts of Democracy, National Cohesion and Electoral Integrity”, argued that journalists must go beyond objectivity to embrace editorial responsibility rooted in accuracy, verification, and national interest.
“Without electoral integrity, there can be no democracy. Electoral integrity begets democracy, and democracy begets good governance,” he said.
The governor urged editors to resist sensationalism, avoid divisive reporting, and ensure their platforms do not become tools of misinformation ahead of 2027.
“If unverified claims about rigging circulate unchecked on your platforms, you have undermined the process even before a single vote is cast,” he added.
He called on editors to act as custodians of truth and cohesion, not just reporters of conflict, stressing that their choices determine whether Nigerians approach 2027 “with hope or cynicism.”
