THE American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) have expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over alleged persecution of Christians, declaring readiness to assist in any “liberation and protection efforts.”
In a letter to Trump dated 2 November 2025, and signed by AVID President, Chief Dr. Sylvester Onyia, and Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the group praised the move as a bold step toward defending religious freedom in Nigeria.
“The American Veterans of Igbo Descent sincerely welcome the designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern,” the letter read. “This action gives renewed courage to Christians in Nigeria to continue practicing their faith despite ongoing threats.”
AVID also referenced the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as “the whistleblower who long ago exposed the killings of Christians by terrorist groups allegedly sponsored by the government.” The group condemned his prolonged confinement without trial and called for his release.
Reaffirming their commitment, the veterans wrote, “We are ready and willing to assist in any efforts aimed at the liberation and protection of Christians in Nigeria.”
The statement concluded with blessings for both President Trump and the United States, underscoring AVID’s alignment with the administration’s stance on religious rights and global Christian protection.
