Falana To Sue Oil Firms Over Niger Delta Pollution
By ESTHER McWILLIS-IKHIDE
HUMAN rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has announced plans to lead a legal team against multinational oil companies accused of polluting and abandoning their host communities in the Niger Delta.
Speaking in Port Harcourt during the Ken Saro-Wiwa 30th Memorial Lecture, Falana condemned the continued neglect of oil-producing communities, saying they deserve better living conditions and access to basic amenities.
He accused oil firms of enriching themselves while leaving host communities impoverished, vowing to seek justice and compensation through the courts.
Falana also criticised the execution of the Ogoni Nine, including Saro-Wiwa, describing it as an act of state coercion, not justice.
Other speakers, including environmentalist Nnimmo Bassey, called on the government to enforce accountability, complete the Ogoniland cleanup, and honour Saro-Wiwa’s legacy through environmental justice.
