BY STEPHEN CHUKS
THE National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Harcourt Operations Office, has trained members of the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards (EMVs) in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, on disaster preparedness and response.
The training, held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the council secretariat, was designed to equip corps members under the Community Development Service (CDS) group with practical knowledge and skills to strengthen community resilience.
Leading the exercise, Chief Search and Rescue Officer, Mr. Fortunatus Anyanwu, urged corps members to be proactive in disaster management, particularly in view of the 2025 NiMet flood prediction. He stressed that EMVs should take their sensitization campaigns to the grassroots to deliver life-saving information to vulnerable communities.
The programme featured both classroom sessions and practical drills. Participants were exposed to NEMA’s mandate, disaster management principles, roles of EMVs, and basic first aid techniques, including the recovery position and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The CPR demonstrations generated keen interest, with corps members asking practical questions that were thoroughly addressed.
Speaking on behalf of the trainees, the CDS President commended NEMA for the impactful programme, promising that corps members would put their training into practice through awareness campaigns in schools, markets, and other public places across Rivers communities.
