Music Industry Filled With Darkness –Tiwa Savage

NIGERIA’s Afrobeats Queen, Tiwa Savage, has opened up about the challenges of the music industry, describing it as “filled with darkness.”
Speaking during an Instagram live session, the ‘You 4 Me’ singer explained that despite the difficulties, her faith in God has kept her grounded and prevented her from falling.
“This industry is filled with so much darkness. I wish you guys knew, so much darkness. But I thank God that I’ve kept my eyes on Him. I haven’t fallen,” she said.
Facing Criticism for Her Album
Tiwa Savage also discussed the reception of her recent album, ‘This One Is Personal,’ noting that some critics dismissed it because it lacked big-name features.
“When I put out the track list of my album, I saw so many people saying I didn’t feature the big names from America or the A-listers. They just automatically concluded that because I don’t have those features on the album, it’s not going to be good,” she said.
She emphasized that she chose to stay true to her artistry, embracing a vulnerable record without club hits:
“Honestly, having you guys is enough for me. Sometimes, like they say, you don’t need a lot of people, you just need the right people. I don’t need millions of fans, I just need the right ones.”
Overcoming Hurdles
Savage revealed that the album took over two years to complete, with numerous hurdles along the way, including doubts from others about the viability of a vulnerable, non-club-focused record.
“People just want to hear gbedu, bangers, and club records. I don’t have any club records, and they said it wasn’t going to work, that people wouldn’t stream it,” she explained.
She added that despite the skepticism, she remained committed to creating music that reflects her true artistic vision.
A Long-Standing Perspective
This is not the first time Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about the industry. In January 2025, she described the music business as “filled with dangerous sharks,” highlighting the competitive and sometimes harsh environment African artists navigate.
