NSC Pushes For Women’s Inclusion In Sports Governance

THE National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) agenda of increasing women’s participation in sports governance.
In a statement signed by Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press at NSC, the Commission announced the formal recognition of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) as a stakeholder in the governance structure of National Sports Federations (NSF).
According to the statement, this move reflects Nigeria’s resolve to align with international standards while promoting gender inclusiveness in sports administration.
Women Lead Key Departments at NSC
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade have championed inclusiveness in the Commission’s leadership. Currently, three core departments are led by women:
-
Mrs. Mbora – Federations and Elite Athletes
-
Mrs. Amaka Ashiofu – Grassroots Development
-
Mrs. Thecla Opara – Festivals & Para Sports
Their leadership demonstrates how gender inclusion strengthens governance and drives excellence across Nigerian sports.
AFFAN Representation Enhances Governance
By recommending AFFAN’s representation on NSF boards, the NSC is opening new opportunities for women in sports governance. Moreover, it allows former female athletes to contribute their experience, discipline, and inspiration to national sports administration.
“These national heroes once carried Nigeria’s colours with pride and distinction on international stages. Now, their experience will help guide policies, mentor the next generation, and sustain their legacy in the boardroom,” the statement noted.
In addition, increasing women’s representation aligns with global best practices and ensures that the leadership of Nigerian sports benefits from the insight and expertise of accomplished female athletes.
Impact on Nigerian Sports
The NSC emphasized that the inclusion of AFFAN goes beyond administrative reform. It recognizes that those who won medals and brought glory to Nigeria deserve a role in shaping the future of sports.
Consequently, AFFAN will be represented on the boards of national sports federations in the forthcoming elections. Through this recognition, the NSC reaffirms its commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth in Nigerian sports.
