Senate Pledges Careful Review Before Approving State Creation Requests

The Senate has assured Nigerians that it will carefully examine all requests for state creation before making any recommendations or approvals. The National Assembly emphasized that it will conduct the process with integrity, without bias or personal interests.
Senate Spokesman and Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed this over the weekend at his country home in Ilawe-Ekiti. He revealed that the Senate has received 61 requests for state creation so far.
“All requests will be reviewed and examined. The Constitutional Review Committee, led by Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau, will assess, aggregate, and filter them before preparing a report for the Senate,” Adaramodu explained.
He added that once the report is ready, both chambers of the National Assembly will hold comprehensive public hearings to allow stakeholders for and against state creation to present their views.
“State creation is a serious matter that requires auditing demographic, geographic, and historical data. In some cases, even within the requesting states, there is no full consensus. All these factors must be considered before any recommendation is made,” he said.
Adaramodu stressed that lawmakers have not recommended the creation of any state yet and that they would prioritize national interest over regional or ethnic sentiments.
“We welcome input from all Nigerians — elders, professionals, political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, women’s groups, CSOs, and even Nigerians in the diaspora. Public hearings will be open to all, and the final document will reflect the collective input of Nigerians,” he said.
He assured that the National Assembly’s goal is to ensure that any constitutional amendments or state creation decisions serve the best interests of Nigeria and its people.
