DELTA Stats Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has reiterated his administration’s dedication to enhancing security across the state. Speaking at the annual lecture of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) held in Asaba on Wednesday, the governor emphasized the implementation of locally tailored strategies to tackle security challenges.
Represented by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, Governor Oborevwori outlined a comprehensive approach to achieving peace and security, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with stakeholders and the use of available resources.
“As a government, security is central to our administration’s agenda. Enhanced Peace and Security is a key pillar of our M.O.R.E. Agenda, alongside Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, and Realistic Reforms,” the governor stated.
He underscored the necessity of peace and security as a foundation for social and economic progress, highlighting mechanisms introduced to detect early warning signals, prevent and resolve conflicts, and engage stakeholders such as traditional rulers, community leaders, and youths.
The governor also emphasized the administration’s focus on youth engagement through social safety net schemes aimed at reducing restiveness, as well as partnerships with security agencies to maintain law and order.
To bolster security operations, the state government recently donated 31 operational vehicles to police and other security agencies. The joint security force, formerly known as “Delta Hawk,” has been rebranded as “Operation Delta Sweep,” reflecting the administration’s commitment to tackling crimes like illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug-related offenses.
“Our security agencies deserve commendation for their efforts and successes. The rebranding of our joint security force is a testament to our resolve to implement pragmatic and indigenous strategies to minimize crime,” Governor Oborevwori added.
He assured residents of continued support to ensure Delta remains a secure and peaceful state for citizens and investors.
In his address, the governor also praised members of the Delta Online Publishers Forum for their contributions to public discourse and the promotion of the M.O.R.E. Agenda. He called on journalists to adhere to ethical practices, urging them to fact-check information with government officials and avoid blackmail, media trials, or cyberbullying.
“The media has a significant impact on society and should reflect a positive image that promotes national unity and harmony,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to openness and transparency, pledging to create an enabling environment for journalists to carry out their duties responsibly and effectively.
