Beyond Book Publishing: REPRONIG Pushes Fair Royalties & Legal Reproduction Of Creative Works

REPRONIG Seeks Stronger Protection for Nigeria’s Creative Community
AUTHORS, publishers, visual artists and other creators are being encouraged to take greater control of their intellectual property as the Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) intensifies its nationwide copyright advocacy campaign.
The initiative is designed to increase awareness of reprographic rights and collective rights management across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. In particular, it seeks to ensure that creators receive fair compensation when others reproduce their published works through photocopying, scanning and similar processes.
Such protection is increasingly important because books, journals, images and educational materials support teaching, research, scholarship and professional activities across the country. However, when institutions reproduce these materials without appropriate rights management, creators may lose the financial rewards associated with their intellectual effort.
REPRONIG is therefore encouraging both rightsholders and users of copyrighted materials to understand their responsibilities and support lawful reproduction.
Copyright Protection as a Foundation for Creative Growth
Operating within Nigeria’s Copyright Act, 2022, REPRONIG provides a collective framework for managing reproduction rights on behalf of literary and image-based creators.
Through this approach, the society seeks to make it easier for rightsholders to establish their claims, authorise the use of their works and receive appropriate remuneration where applicable.
Moreover, its advocacy programme targets educational institutions, libraries, research organisations and other users whose activities frequently involve reproducing copyrighted materials.
By promoting awareness and compliance, the society hopes to strengthen the relationship between creators and institutions that depend on their work.
Under the board chairmanship of Mr. Gbadega Adedapo, REPRONIG is also working through affiliate associations that represent authors, publishers, visual artists and other creative professionals.
These partnerships, the society’s broader engagement suggests, are important to building a more coordinated system for protecting intellectual property and supporting Nigeria’s creative economy.
Digital System Offers Creators a Rights Management Tool
Alongside public sensitisation, REPRONIG is developing its Digital Rights Management System (DRMS) to improve the administration of reproduction rights.
The platform enables rightsholders to register their works, document their repertoires and establish mandates for rights administration and potential royalty distribution.
Consequently, the system could help improve the organisation of rights information and support more transparent management of creators’ works.
REPRONIG is also working with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) to promote international cooperation and professional standards.
Additionally, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) provides oversight of the society, while institutional affiliates include the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association of Nigeria (ANFAAN) and Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA).
Together, these relationships provide a foundation for broader engagement with Nigeria’s creative and knowledge industries.
Nationwide Campaign Targets Six Geopolitical Zones
To bring the message directly to stakeholders, REPRONIG is conducting advocacy and sensitisation activities at venues across the country.
The programme began its listed engagements in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday 3 October 2026, at Ojaja University, Eyenkorin.
On Thursday 22 October, two events are scheduled to take place simultaneously: one at Amadeo Event Centre, Ebeano Tunnel, Enugu, and the other at the SHL Auditorium, Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
The campaign will continue on Friday 23 October, with activities at Ace Putor, University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Rivers State, and UI Ventures Mini Hall, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
Its final scheduled stop is the Shettima Ali Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, on Thursday 19 November 2026.
All sessions are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. prompt. Through these engagements, REPRONIG is inviting creators, publishers, educational institutions, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss rights protection, responsible reproduction and collective management.
“Your Creativity Deserves Protection & Rewards!”
REPRONIG is using the campaign slogan, “Your Creativity Deserves Protection and Rewards!”, to encourage creators to take practical steps towards protecting their work.
The society advises authors to register their works, keep their repertoires secure and monitor how institutions reproduce their materials. It also encourages stakeholders to ensure that reproduction complies with applicable copyright requirements.
Authors and other rightsholders can register through https://app.repronig.org/member/register. The organisation also says its mobile application is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, allowing users to register and manage their rights on the go.
Ultimately, protecting reproduction rights goes beyond securing royalties for individual creators. It also supports a sustainable environment for writing, publishing, visual arts, education and research.
By expanding awareness and encouraging collective rights management, REPRONIG aims to strengthen recognition of creative labour and promote a system in which the use of intellectual property is matched by appropriate responsibility and reward.
