Food Bank Initiative Reaches Women Across 25 LGAs
THE Wife of the Delta State Governor and Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, has launched the third edition of the Delta State Food Bank Initiative, extending cash and food assistance to 2,500 vulnerable women across the state.
The programme, organised by the Office of the First Lady, took place at the Event Centre in Asaba on Wednesday. It seeks to ease food insecurity and support households struggling with the rising cost of basic necessities.
To ensure broad coverage, organisers selected 100 beneficiaries from each of Delta’s 25 local government areas. Consequently, the latest edition reached 2,500 women, with each beneficiary receiving a package of food items and a cash grant.
A major highlight was the surprise presentation of ₦50,000 to each woman, bringing the total cash support to ₦125 million. In addition, organisers distributed food items valued at more than ₦100 million. Based on the figures announced at the event, the combined value of the intervention exceeded ₦225 million.
First Lady Emphasises Family Welfare
Speaking at the programme, Deaconess Oborevwori reaffirmed her commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable women and families. She noted that women often shoulder significant responsibility for securing food and meeting other essential household needs.
According to her, the Food Bank Initiative emerged from a desire to provide practical assistance to women facing economic difficulties. She added that supporting women could benefit entire families because of their central role in household welfare and development.
The First Lady said the programme was intended to bring relief to women across Delta while helping families meet their basic needs. She also argued that development should extend beyond roads and other physical infrastructure to include human capital development and interventions that directly improve people’s lives.
Furthermore, she encouraged individuals and organisations to support less privileged members of society according to their means. She urged beneficiaries to use the cash and food assistance judiciously, particularly to address essential household needs.
Charity Foundation Extends Welfare Interventions
Beyond the Food Bank Initiative, Deaconess Oborevwori highlighted the activities of the You Matter Charity Foundation, including free medical outreaches for vulnerable children and families across Delta State’s federal constituencies.
She stressed that sustained intervention remained important to ensure that vulnerable residents benefited from available government programmes and charitable initiatives.
Similarly, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Ezinne Kathrine Onyeme, underscored the importance of compassion and practical support for women and families. She observed that women carry substantial responsibilities in providing food and meeting household needs, adding that assistance to women ultimately benefits the wider family.
Onyeme commended the initiative for reaching women in need and providing support that could ease some of the pressures associated with caring for their families.
Speakers Call for Compassion & Community Support
Delivering a message titled “Whatever You Do for Others, You Do for Christ,” Pastor Solomon Nathaniel urged participants to demonstrate compassion, generosity and service to humanity.
He encouraged them to extend kindness to vulnerable people, noting that helping those in need reflects the values of the Christian faith.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Princess Pat Ajudua, praised Deaconess Oborevwori for sustaining the Food Bank Initiative. She described the programme as evidence of continued concern for vulnerable women and their families.
The event also featured the symbolic presentation of food items to chairpersons representing the state’s 25 local government areas. Organisers subsequently distributed the items to beneficiaries at the venue.
Sustaining Support for Vulnerable Households
The latest intervention highlights the role that targeted cash assistance and food distribution can play in easing immediate household pressures. By reaching women across all 25 local government areas, the initiative seeks to extend support beyond the state capital.
However, sustained progress against food insecurity will also depend on broader measures that improve household incomes, strengthen livelihoods and make essential goods more affordable.
For the beneficiaries, the cash grants and food packages offer immediate assistance with basic needs. Meanwhile, the programme places renewed emphasis on community compassion and the importance of supporting households facing economic hardship.
