From An Impressive Speech To A ₦50 Million Scholarship: Oborevwori Invests In Delta Student’s Future

DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has fulfilled his ₦50 million scholarship promise to Miss Davina Ogheneovo, a Junior Technical Two student of Model Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area.
The governor presented the scholarship commitment on Monday when he received Davina, her mother, the school principal, the local government council chairman, the Commissioner for Technical Education and other officials at Government House, Asaba. The meeting followed Davina’s impressive extempore speech during the inauguration of the college last Friday.
Oborevwori explained that the award reflected his administration’s commitment to promoting education and rewarding excellence. According to him, education remains one of the most enduring legacies a government or family can provide.
To illustrate this commitment, he recalled that Delta students who emerged world champions at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, received ₦20 million each. He also noted that his administration recognises outstanding university graduates for their academic achievements.
The governor said Davina’s confidence and eloquence, despite attempts to distract her during her speech, influenced his decision to support her education. Consequently, he assured the student and her family that the scholarship would cover her studies through technical college and university.
“Education remains with you for life. You may acquire wealth and other things, but education is the best legacy you can give your children,” he said.
Furthermore, Oborevwori directed that the scholarship funds be paid into a dedicated account managed by Davina’s parents exclusively for her education. She will assume control of the account when she turns 18, he added.
Beyond Davina’s case, the governor recalled an earlier intervention in which he rescued an abused boy and offered him a scholarship. He said the beneficiary had completed secondary school and was now attending university, reaffirming his commitment to helping vulnerable children access education.
Davina, who hopes to become a medical doctor, expressed gratitude for the scholarship. She also commended the state government for providing modern facilities at Model Technical College, Oghareki, and pledged to remain focused on her studies to justify the confidence placed in her.
Meanwhile, her mother, Mrs. Berkeley Ogheneovo, described the scholarship as an unexpected gesture that would help secure her daughter’s education through university. She explained that she chose the technical college because she believes technical education equips young people with practical skills and prepares them for productive careers.
The Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, said the award demonstrated the government’s commitment to educational development and the advancement of promising students.
Similarly, the Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Christian Onogba, commended Oborevwori for establishing the college in the area. He said the institution would equip young people with practical skills, encourage entrepreneurship and promote self-reliance.
Onogba also pledged the council’s support for protecting the school’s infrastructure. In addition, he urged residents to take ownership of the institution and safeguard its facilities to ensure that future students benefit from the investment.
