THE Imo State Government has assured that it is working with security agencies to secure the safe release of 19 NYSC members abducted in the state.
The corps members were kidnapped five days ago along the Owerri-Onitsha Road, raising fresh concerns over security in the area.
However, the state government has now broken its silence on the incident.
Commissioner for Information, Public Enlightenment and Strategy, Hon. Declan Mbadiwe Emelumba, said the government was closely monitoring the situation.
Emelumba spoke in Owerri on Monday, stressing that the government had not ignored the plight of the abducted corps members.
“Of course, you know that the government is not sleeping on the matter,” he said.
According to him, the state government is collaborating with security agencies to secure the victims’ release.
He also expressed confidence that the corps members would regain their freedom unharmed.
Meanwhile, the abduction has renewed attention on the security challenges along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.
The government’s latest assurance comes as families and other stakeholders await the safe return of the affected corps members.
