Approved Books for Four Class Levels
THE Federal Ministry of Education has released its final ranked and approved textbook list for the 2026–2028 academic cycle.
The first phase covers core subjects for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 and Senior Secondary School 1.
The ministry said the exercise is intended to ensure that schools use quality instructional materials that meet the required national standards.
The announcement was made by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Boriowo Folasade.
QR Codes to Fight Fake Textbooks
As part of the new approval system, every textbook on the authorised list is expected to carry a QR Tracking Code assigned by the ministry.
The security feature is designed to help schools, parents and other buyers verify whether a book has been officially approved.
The measure also targets the circulation of pirated, counterfeit and unapproved educational publications.
Each approved listing contains information including the book title, author, publisher, publication year and tracking code.

Phase Two Already Under Preparation
The ministry said work is already under way on the second phase of the textbook approval process.
That phase is expected to cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
The phased approach means the complete textbook catalogue for the 2026–2028 cycle will be released progressively.
Ministry Urges Schools to Verify Books
The national ranking and approval exercise was conducted under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad.
The ministry urged school administrators, private school proprietors, procurement officers and parents to purchase only textbooks appearing on the approved list.
It also explained that the generation of individual tracking codes contributed to delays in completing the final catalogue.
According to the ministry, the additional verification process is intended to strengthen quality control and ensure that approved textbooks can be authenticated.
Accessing the Official List
The full Phase 1 catalogue contains the approved titles and their identifying information.
Schools and parents are expected to consult the official list before purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
The QR-based system also provides an additional layer of verification at the point of purchase, helping users distinguish authorised publications from books that have not gone through the ministry’s approval process.
The initiative is therefore designed to link textbook approval with a more traceable system of distribution and verification across Nigerian schools.
