Falconets’ World Cup Dream Ends As Team Returns To Nigeria

NIGERIA’S U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have returned home after their quarter-final exit from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The team arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday evening.

Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, led the federation’s officials who received the players and their officials.

The Falconets suffered a painful exit on Sunday after Colombia scored a stoppage-time winner in Łódź.

The narrow defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals. It also brought their campaign at the global youth tournament to an end.

Despite the disappointment, the team’s quarter-final appearance marked the conclusion of another competitive outing on the world stage.

Ikpeme was joined at the airport by several members of the NFF management.

They included the Director of Legal Services, Okey Obi; Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen; Director of Protocol, Barnabas Joro; Acting Director of Member Associations, Ali Abubakar Muhammad; and Deputy Director of Audit, Margaret Magai.

Their presence reflected the federation’s reception for the players and officials after their efforts in Poland.

Now back in Nigeria, attention will shift towards assessing the Falconets’ campaign.

The technical team and football authorities are also expected to examine the lessons from the tournament as preparations begin for future international competitions.

For the players, the experience provides another opportunity to build on their exposure to elite youth football.

The quarter-final defeat may have ended Nigeria’s title ambitions, but the return home marks the beginning of the next stage of their development.
