Oborevwori Gives South Africa Returnees ₦2 Million Grants, Monthly Stipends

THE Delta State Government has renewed its support for Deltans who returned from South Africa following xenophobic attacks.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved a ₦2 million grant for each affected family.
The support package also provides monthly stipends of ₦200,000 for individual returnees and ₦300,000 for affected families.
In addition, the government will provide free medical care to the beneficiaries.
The returnees recently met with the Commissioner for the Bureau for Special Duties, Hon. Ejiro Terry Etacherure, to appreciate the government for its intervention.
Etacherure assured them that the government would continue to support their welfare.
He also urged the returnees to use available opportunities to rebuild their lives and become economically independent.
Furthermore, he advised them to remain law-abiding and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking for the returnees, their delegation coordinator, Uzor Okechukwu Michael, thanked the state government for the assistance.
However, he called for a broader reintegration programme.
Such a programme, he said, should cover employment, agriculture, healthcare and skills development.
According to him, additional livelihood support would help the returnees move beyond emergency assistance.
It would also enable them to establish sustainable sources of income within their communities.
The returnees expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori and other officials for the assistance.
They also pledged to remain responsible members of society.
The latest appeal, however, points to a broader challenge.
Financial assistance can help families recover from immediate hardship, but long-term reintegration requires sustainable livelihoods.
Job placement, vocational training, agricultural support and continued healthcare could therefore strengthen the impact of the government’s intervention.
For the returnees, the goal now extends beyond returning home.
It is about rebuilding stable lives and becoming productive members of their communities.
