2027: Akwa Ibom Police Warn Political Groups Against Unauthorised Rallies

THE Akwa Ibom State Police Command has directed political parties, support groups and other organisations to notify the command before holding rallies, processions, campaigns or large political gatherings.
The command said the measure will help prevent clashes and strengthen security coordination ahead of the 2027 elections.
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare issued the directive as political activities gather momentum across the state.
He explained that rival groups could inadvertently choose the same venue, route, date or time for their activities. Early notification, he said, would allow the police to deploy personnel, manage traffic and protect participants and residents.
Organisers must provide key details in advance. These include the date, time, venue, expected crowd size and proposed routes for processions.
Azare stressed that the directive does not seek to restrict lawful political activities. Instead, it aims to ensure that one group’s political rights do not endanger another group’s activities or the wider public.
The commissioner also pledged police neutrality. He said the command would provide a level playing field for political parties and groups regardless of their affiliations.
At the same time, the police issued a strong warning to political thugs and other troublemakers.
Azare said officers would take lawful action against anyone who uses political gatherings to cause violence or threaten public order.
The warning covers several offences. They include carrying offensive weapons, intimidating political opponents, destroying property, unlawfully blocking roads and provoking rival groups.
The commissioner also directed area commanders, divisional police officers and tactical commanders to strengthen intelligence gathering.
They must also maintain adequate security around political activities and other major public gatherings.
Meanwhile, the command urged political leaders to control their supporters and promote peaceful engagement.
According to Azare, Akwa Ibom’s political differences must not undermine the state’s security.
The police therefore appealed to political parties, support groups and residents to cooperate with security authorities as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
