Athletes Launch Beijing 2027 Push As Qualification Window Opens

By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
THE qualification window for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing has officially opened, giving athletes around the world the chance to secure their places at the global competition.
For most events, athletes must record qualifying performances between 23 August 2026 and midnight on 22 August 2027.
World Athletics said athletes must achieve entry standards at competitions classified as World Ranking Category C or above. Performances at lower-level meets will still contribute to world rankings, but they will not count toward automatic qualification through entry standards.
The qualification system is designed to create a balance between direct qualification and world-ranking selection. World Athletics expects about 40 per cent of athletes to qualify by meeting entry standards, while the remaining 60 per cent will earn places through the world rankings.
Athletes and their federations must therefore plan their competition schedules carefully. Strong performances at eligible meets could secure direct qualification, while consistent results throughout the qualification period could improve an athlete’s ranking position.
The 2027 World Athletics Championships will take place at Beijing’s National Stadium, with the qualification window now setting the stage for a year-long race for places at the prestigious event.
