Nigeria Finishes 7th, Tops Africa At Glasgow 2026

TEAM Nigeria ended its Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign with an impressive haul of 24 medals. The contingent won 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals. The performance earned Nigeria seventh place on the overall medals table and made the country the highest-ranked African nation at the Games.
Nigeria collected medals across five sports. Athletics led the way with 12 medals. Para powerlifting followed with six. Weightlifting produced four medals, while para athletics and judo contributed one medal each.
Para powerlifting delivered three gold and three silver medals. Esther Nworgu won gold in the women’s lightweight event. Esther Oyema claimed silver in the same category. Folashade Oluwafemiayo added another gold in the women’s heavyweight division. Rita Ferdinand secured silver, while Riluwan Idris won gold in the men’s heavyweight event. Roland Ezuruike completed the campaign with silver in the men’s lightweight class.
Weightlifting also produced strong results. Ruth Ayodele Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg category. Edidiong Umoafia struck gold in the men’s 71kg event. Onome Didih captured gold in the women’s 53kg class, while Rofiat Lawal added another gold in the women’s 58kg division.
Athletics delivered Nigeria’s biggest medal return. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won gold in the men’s shot put. Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed gold in the men’s 400m hurdles. Samuel Ogazi triumphed in the men’s 400m.
Jessica Oji, Udodi Onwuzurike and Ruth Usoro secured silver medals. Kayinsola Ajayi, Temitope Adeshina, Tobi Amusan and Ella Onojuvwevwo added bronze medals. Nigeria also claimed bronze in both the men’s 4x100m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay.
Goodness Nwachukwu added another gold in para athletics by winning the women’s discus event.
Judo completed Nigeria’s medal tally. Enku Ekuta won bronze in the women’s -63kg category. Her achievement ended Nigeria’s 24-year wait for a Commonwealth Games judo medal.
The 24-medal performance highlighted Team Nigeria’s consistency across multiple sports and reinforced the country’s status as Africa’s leading force at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
