Home Advantage Ends Early For 2026 World Cup Co-Hosts

Historic Tournament Ends in Disappointment for Co-Hosts
THE 2026 FIFA World Cup has produced an unprecedented outcome, with all three host nations—the United States, Mexico and Canada—eliminated before reaching the quarter-finals despite enjoying home advantage throughout the competition.
The United States became the last of the co-hosts to exit after suffering a comprehensive 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 in Seattle, bringing an end to the hopes of the tournament’s host nations.
The result means the expanded 48-team World Cup will conclude without any of its host countries represented in the last eight.
USA Fall to Clinical Belgium
Belgium delivered one of the most convincing performances of the knockout stage, overpowering the Americans at Lumen Field to book their place in the quarter-finals.
The encounter followed intense pre-match attention surrounding the reinstatement of a red card involving United States forward Folarin Balogun, as well as comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the fixture.
However, Belgium remained focused, producing an efficient attacking display that left the hosts with little opportunity for a comeback.
Canada and Mexico Also Bow Out
Canada had earlier become the first co-host to leave the tournament after a 3-0 defeat to Morocco.
Azzedine Ounahi struck twice before Soufiane Rahimi completed the victory, while Canada’s campaign was further undermined by injury concerns involving captain Alphonso Davies.
Mexico’s journey ended a day later following a dramatic 3-2 defeat to England before a packed Estadio Azteca crowd.
Jude Bellingham’s quick-fire brace gave England control before Harry Kane converted a penalty despite England being reduced to ten men. The defeat also signalled the end of Javier Aguirre’s tenure as head coach, with assistant Rafael Márquez expected to succeed him.
Expanded World Cup Continues Without Hosts
The 2026 edition marked several historic milestones, becoming the first FIFA World Cup jointly hosted by three nations and the first to feature 48 participating teams.
Played across 16 cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada, the tournament now moves into the quarter-finals with only visiting nations remaining in contention.
Teams still battling for the title include Belgium, England, Morocco, France, Norway, Spain, Argentina and the winner from the remaining Round of 16 fixtures.
While the tournament has attracted record crowds and widespread global attention, the early elimination of all three hosts underscores the increasingly competitive nature of international football, where home advantage alone is no guarantee of success.
