Twenty-Four Nigerian Universities Make 2026 Global Rankings

NIGERIA has strengthened its position in global higher education after 24 of its universities earned places in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and the THE Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, giving the country the highest representation among nations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The latest rankings reflect Nigeria’s growing academic competitiveness, with institutions improving their performances in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international engagement.
Nigeria Records Historic Representation
The 2026 rankings mark another milestone for Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, as the country’s representation increased from 21 universities in both the 2024 and 2025 editions to 24 institutions this year.
Leading the Nigerian contingent are the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos, which retained their status among the country’s highest-ranked universities. Bayero University Kano also emerged as one of Nigeria’s strongest-performing institutions in the latest assessment.
The rankings comprise 17 federal universities, three state-owned universities and four private institutions, highlighting broad-based improvements across the nation’s higher education landscape.
Recognition Reflects Growing Academic Competitiveness
Beyond the traditional flagship universities, several specialised institutions focusing on technology and agriculture secured places in the rankings, reflecting increased recognition for their research output and academic contributions.
State-owned universities also strengthened their international visibility through improvements in teaching quality, institutional performance and scholarly research, while private universities continued to expand their influence in the global academic space.
Education analysts say the latest results demonstrate gradual progress in strengthening Nigeria’s university system despite persistent challenges facing the sector.
Government Hails Achievement
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the development as a significant achievement for Nigeria’s higher education system, attributing it to ongoing reforms aimed at improving university standards.
According to the minister, the growing international recognition of Nigerian universities reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to making tertiary education a driver of innovation, research, human capital development and sustainable economic growth.
Opportunities for Global Partnerships
Higher education experts believe the improved rankings could enhance Nigeria’s international academic reputation by attracting greater research funding, strengthening global institutional partnerships and encouraging increased investment in teaching, innovation and infrastructure.
The recognition is also expected to boost student and faculty exchanges, expand collaborative research opportunities and improve the global competitiveness of Nigerian graduates.
