Oborevwori Moves To Commission Oghareki Technical College As Final Preparations Begin

Delta Nears Completion of Another Flagship Technical Education Project
THE Delta State Government has announced that the newly constructed Model Technical College in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, is approaching completion and will soon be inaugurated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as part of the administration’s ongoing drive to strengthen technical and vocational education across the state.
The disclosure followed an inspection visit by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, accompanied by the Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, and the Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Chris Onogba.
According to government officials, the inspection was aimed at assessing the institution’s readiness ahead of its formal commissioning and ensuring that all facilities meet the required standards before students are admitted.
Final Adjustments Before Commissioning
Speaking during the inspection, Aniagwu said although the project had reached an advanced stage of completion, some minor defects and unfinished aspects were identified and would be corrected before the governor’s visit.
He explained that the contractor handling the project and relevant government agencies had been directed to address all outstanding issues within two weeks.
The commissioner noted that the administration remained committed to delivering projects that meet international standards, stressing that quality assurance was necessary before the official inauguration.
He described the college as one of the most modern technical institutions in the state, adding that the facility reflects the government’s determination to provide young people with access to world-class technical education.
Building Skills for Economic Growth
Aniagwu said the Model Technical College forms part of a broader strategy to equip Delta youths with practical and employable skills that can support entrepreneurship, industrial growth and self-reliance.
He noted that technical and vocational education had become increasingly important in addressing unemployment and preparing young people for emerging opportunities in technology, manufacturing and skilled trades.
According to him, the Oghareki institution joins other technical education projects already completed or nearing completion across the state, including the recently commissioned Model Technical College in Omadino and another facility under development in Irri.
The commissioner stressed that investment in technical education represents a long-term strategy for economic development and workforce preparation.
Security and Sustainability Measures
Government officials also highlighted efforts to secure the institution and protect public investment.
Aniagwu disclosed that the project includes perimeter fencing, controlled access points, hostel accommodation and other security features designed to provide a safe learning environment.
He urged members of the host community to take ownership of the facility and work collectively to prevent vandalism or destruction of equipment.
According to him, safeguarding the institution is a shared responsibility because its benefits will extend beyond the immediate community to future generations of students.
The commissioner further revealed that maintenance provisions, including retention and guarantee periods, have been incorporated into the project framework to ensure that contractors remain accountable for addressing defects after completion.
Government Targets Strong Academic Take-Off
Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, said the state government had already begun preparations for the operational phase of the institution.
He disclosed that plans were underway to recruit and deploy qualified teachers and technical instructors to guarantee a smooth commencement of academic activities.
Ufoh described Governor Oborevwori’s investment in technical education as evidence of a deliberate effort to create opportunities for young people through skills acquisition and vocational training.
Drawing from lessons learned at the Model Technical College in Omadino, he expressed confidence that the Oghareki institution would commence operations with adequate staffing and modern equipment.
Community Welcomes Development Initiative
For residents of Ethiope West, the project is being viewed as a major educational and economic milestone.
Local Government Chairman, Hon. Chris Onogba, said the institution would provide young people with practical skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship while helping to reduce youth restiveness and crime.
He pledged the support of the local government, traditional institutions, community leaders and residents in protecting the facility.
According to him, technical education remains one of the most effective tools for empowering youths and promoting sustainable community development.
With commissioning expected in the coming weeks, the Oghareki Model Technical College is poised to become a significant addition to Delta State’s growing network of technical and vocational education institutions.
