Afreximbank Opens Entries For 2026 CANEX Prize For Publishing In Africa

Building a Pan-African and Diaspora Literary Ecosystem
THE announcement of the third CANEX Prize for Publishing in Africa marks another step in Afreximbank’s broader strategy to develop a connected creative economy spanning Africa and the Caribbean.
Through its CANEX Book Factory initiative, the bank continues to invest in publishing infrastructure, writer development, and cultural exchange across regions historically linked by shared heritage and storytelling traditions.
From Continental Focus to Diaspora Inclusion
While the prize was initially rooted in Africa’s publishing landscape, the 2026 edition expands eligibility to include publishers from the Caribbean Community and selected countries in Latin America, including Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Panama.
This shift reflects a deliberate effort to strengthen literary ties across the Atlantic and broaden the visibility of African and diasporic narratives.
Standards, Eligibility, and Creative Scope
The prize focuses on trade books published in 2025, covering fiction, nonfiction, and poetry aimed at general audiences. Academic texts and textbooks are excluded to preserve emphasis on creative and commercial publishing.
Entries will be assessed on literary quality, editorial strength, and production standards—highlighting the full publishing process rather than authorship alone.
Funding, Recognition, and Industry Impact
The winning publisher will receive $20,000, while four shortlisted finalists will each be awarded $2,000. The prize will be presented during CANEX WKND 2026 in Lagos.
Past winners such as Cassava Republic Press and Karavan Press reflect the prize’s growing reputation in spotlighting influential African publishing houses.
A Growing Platform for Publishing Development
Beyond the award itself, CANEX continues to position publishing as a key pillar of Africa’s creative economy, alongside fashion, film, music, and gastronomy.
Publishers are encouraged to submit entries via the official portal as the initiative deepens its role in shaping the continent’s literary future.
