NIGERIA’S wrestling team delivered an impressive performance at the United World Wrestling Ranking Series in Mongolia, finishing the competition with three medals and reinforcing their growing reputation on the international stage.
Three of the four Nigerian athletes who competed reached the podium, marking one of the country’s most successful outings at a major ranking event.
Ojo Leads the Charge With Silver
Damola Hannah Ojo produced a standout run to claim silver in her category. She opened her campaign with a dominant 10–0 technical superiority win over Mongolia’s Tuvshinjargal Tarav before defeating India’s Priya 5–1 in the semi-final.
Her gold medal bid ended in the final, where she lost 8–0 to India’s Kajal Kajal, settling for a well-earned silver medal.
Kolawole Secures Hard-Fought Bronze
Esther Kolawole also delivered a strong performance, clinching bronze after a series of impressive bouts. She began with a commanding 10–0 victory over China’s Huan Yang and stunned world number one Amina Tandelova of Russia with a 6–0 win.
Kolawole narrowly missed the final after a close 5–4 semi-final defeat to North Korea’s Kim Ok-Ju, but recovered to secure bronze.
Ogunsanya Completes Medal Trio
The team’s overall tally was completed by Christianah Ogunsanya, who had earlier secured a podium finish, ensuring Nigeria ended the competition with three medals in total.
The results highlight Nigeria’s increasing competitiveness and consistency in international wrestling.
