Akwa Ibom Expands Blue Economy Drive With Acquisition Of New Passenger Ferries

Government says vessels will enhance connectivity, maritime safety and commercial activities across coastal areas.
IN a renewed push to transform water transportation infrastructure, the Akwa Ibom State Government has acquired two modern passenger ferries to improve mobility and support economic expansion in riverine communities.
The project, championed by Governor Umo Eno under the ARISE Agenda, is expected to strengthen marine transportation services while promoting the development of the state’s blue economy.
Authorities explained that the ferries were procured to provide safer, faster and more comfortable alternatives for commuters and businesses operating within the state’s waterways.
One of the ferries is an 18-metre vessel constructed by Hydro Marine and Boat Services in Lagos. The passenger ferry is equipped with modern safety and monitoring facilities, including advanced navigational systems, CCTV surveillance linked to a command and control centre and real-time tracking technology.
The vessel has a passenger capacity of 58 persons alongside a 12-seat VIP section. It also features solar installation, air-conditioned cabins, sound systems and television facilities intended to improve passenger comfort during transit.
The second vessel is a 24-metre steel passenger ferry built by Naval Shipyard in Port Harcourt. The ferry has a 130-ton capacity and can convey up to 64 passengers as well as six to eight vehicles.
In addition to its transportation capacity, the steel ferry contains onboard medical facilities, luxury interior furnishing and comprehensive communication and navigation systems. Officials said the vessel is powered by dual diesel inboard engines and supported by solar-powered auxiliary systems for operational efficiency.
Government sources said the ferries would help reduce the challenges associated with water transportation in coastal communities while stimulating trade, tourism and investment opportunities.
The initiative also reflects broader plans by the administration to modernise infrastructure, improve interconnectivity and strengthen economic activities tied to the maritime sector in Akwa Ibom State.
