Arm-Wrestling Federation Seeks NGO Support for 2026 Programmes

NAWF Calls for Wider Support
THE President of the Nigerian Arm-Wrestling Federation (NAWF), Samuel Olatunji, has appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations, private bodies and sports enthusiasts to support the federation’s programmes for 2026.
Olatunji said inadequate funding remains one of the biggest obstacles confronting the growth of armwrestling in the country.
According to him, partnerships with NGOs, philanthropists and corporate sponsors are necessary to sustain competitions and athlete development initiatives.
Federation Rolls Out 2026 Activities
Despite financial constraints, the federation has already begun implementing its calendar for the year.
Olatunji said one of the early highlights was the National Arm-Wrestling Championship involving military, paramilitary and civilian participants.
He described the event, which featured 20 teams, as successful and encouraging for the future of the sport.
Lagos Open Produces New Talents
The federation also recently staged the Lagos Open 2026 championship, attracting participation from more than 20 states and institutions.
The competition served as a talent discovery platform for upcoming continental events, including the All Africa Games in Accra later this year and the African Arm-Wrestling Championship in Cairo next year.
Officials say the tournament helped identify promising athletes capable of representing Nigeria internationally.
Lagos Club Dominates Medal Table
At the end of the championship, World Champions Arm-Wrestling Club of Lagos emerged overall winners.
The club finished with 19 gold, 15 silver and four bronze medals.
Oyo State placed second, while Delta State secured third position after strong performances.
