Royal-Led Intervention Boosts Kidney Care In Asaba Hospitals

Community Steps In to Strengthen Healthcare
THE Asaba Community, under the leadership of the Asagba of Asaba, has donated two dialysis machines to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba and Asaba Specialist Hospital in a move aimed at improving treatment for patients with kidney-related illnesses.
The donation, formally presented on 22 April, reflects growing community participation in public healthcare delivery, particularly at a time when access to specialist medical equipment remains a challenge in many parts of Nigeria.
Promise Fulfilled After Hospital Appeal
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Asagba said the intervention followed an appeal made during a visit to the Federal Medical Centre in August 2025.
According to the monarch, the then Acting Medical Director, Dr. Ekenem Omo, requested support to improve quality healthcare services for residents of Asaba and surrounding communities.
He disclosed that within 48 hours of that visit, Ogbueshi Dr. Richard Keshi, Chief Executive Officer of Oak Medical Foundation, pledged to donate two dialysis machines for hospitals in Asaba.
The monarch said the community had now fulfilled that promise.
Why Dialysis Machines Matter
Dialysis machines are critical for patients suffering kidney failure or severe renal complications. They help remove waste and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys can no longer function properly.
Medical experts note that access to dialysis in Nigeria is often limited by:
High Treatment Costs
Many patients struggle to afford repeated sessions.
Inadequate Equipment
Some hospitals have insufficient machines for demand.
Long Waiting Times
Limited capacity can delay treatment.
Distance to Care Centres
Patients may travel long distances for specialist care.
The new equipment is therefore expected to reduce pressure on existing facilities in Asaba.
Call for Lower Treatment Costs
The Asagba also commended Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for ongoing investments in healthcare and appealed for measures to reduce the cost of dialysis treatment.
That request highlights a wider national concern, as many kidney patients face recurring expenses that can quickly become financially overwhelming.
Hospital Management Welcomes Donation
Receiving the equipment, Chief Medical Director of FMC Asaba, Dr. Ekenem Omo, and Chief Medical Director of Asaba Specialist Hospital, Dr. Mrs. Peace Ighosewe, thanked the community for the intervention.
Dr. Ighosewe further appealed for support toward upgrading Asaba Specialist Hospital into a teaching hospital, saying such a move would improve service delivery, training and manpower development.

Growing Role of Communities
The donation underscores how traditional institutions, private foundations and civic groups are increasingly filling gaps in healthcare infrastructure through targeted interventions.
In many communities, such partnerships are becoming essential complements to government spending.
Final Word
For kidney patients in Asaba, the arrival of two dialysis machines could mean faster access to life-saving treatment. For the wider healthcare system, it is another reminder that collaboration often delivers where need is urgent.
