Team Nigeria Begins World Relays Build-Up in Lagos

Nigeria Launches Relay Mission
NIGERIA has stepped up preparations for the 2026 World Relays Championship after opening a training camp in Lagos for athletes selected to represent the country in Botswana next month.
The championship, scheduled for 2–3 May in Gaborone, is expected to feature some of the world’s leading relay teams and serves as a key benchmark event in global athletics.
One-Week Intensive Programme
The Lagos camp will run for one week and is expected to focus on race readiness, baton exchange precision, speed endurance and team coordination.
Relay events often depend as much on chemistry and timing as individual speed, making short camps critical for nations combining athletes from different training bases.
The programme is being supervised by AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon.
Key Names in Camp
Some of Nigeria’s recognised relay athletes have been invited, including Enoch Adegoke, Samson Nathaniel and Patience Okon-George.
The final squad is expected to be strengthened by foreign-based athletes who will join the team on arrival in Botswana.
Why the World Relays Matters
The World Relays has grown into one of athletics’ most strategic events because it influences rankings, qualification opportunities and national relay development.
For Nigeria, a solid showing would:
Improve Global Standing
Strong finishes boost confidence and rankings.
Strengthen Team Depth
New athletes can emerge in relay systems.
Prepare for Bigger Events
Useful rehearsal for future world championships and Olympic cycles.
Nigeria’s Traditional Strength
Nigeria has historically produced world-class sprinters and relay talent, though inconsistency in baton exchanges and preparation has sometimes affected medal prospects.
Officials hope the current camp structure will improve execution and competitiveness.
Final Countdown
With less than two weeks to the championship, the Lagos camp represents a decisive stage of preparations.
If fitness levels hold and combinations click, Nigeria could be one of the teams to watch in Botswana.
