Oborevwori Wins Double Honours At Independent Awards

Governor Receives Double Recognition
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has received two major honours at the 2025 Independent Newspapers Awards, emerging as Outstanding Independent Governor and Best Independent Governor in Urban Renewal of the Year.
The awards were presented on Saturday night during the Independent Newspapers Silver Jubilee Awards ceremony held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, as part of activities marking the media organisation’s 25th anniversary.
The event carried the theme: “Game Changers: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Tomorrow.”
Deputy Governor Represents Oborevwori
Governor Oborevwori was represented at the ceremony by the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, who described the honours as confirmation of the administration’s developmental strides since assuming office in 2023.
Speaking with journalists after the event, Onyeme said the recognition reflected the visible transformation taking place across the state.
According to him, many residents and observers have acknowledged the governor’s impact, particularly in urban renewal and infrastructure development.
Focus on Infrastructure Growth
The deputy governor highlighted major projects executed under the current administration, especially in urban centres across Delta State.
He cited the construction of flyovers in Ughelli, Warri, Effurun, and Enerhen Junction, saying the projects had improved traffic movement while also enhancing the outlook of major cities.
Onyeme further disclosed that the administration had delivered about 300 kilometres of roads within the last year, describing it as a strategic effort to close infrastructure gaps across the state.
Recognition as Motivation
He said the awards would serve as encouragement for the government to intensify efforts in delivering more democratic dividends to residents.
“We have not rested, and we will not rest. We were elected to serve the people of Delta State, and we remain committed to that promise,” Onyeme stated.
He added that Governor Oborevwori remained committed to leaving a strong legacy through service, development, and sustainable projects.
Independent Newspapers Explains Selection Process
Earlier, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, congratulated all recipients.
He explained that winners emerged through a process that included public voting, jury review, and final approval by the organisation’s board.
Omanufeme also announced that more activities to mark the newspaper’s silver jubilee would continue in October with a broader stakeholders’ celebration.
