Cyclists Face Tough Trials Ahead Of Abuja Showpiece

Countdown to Continental Championships
NIGERIA’S elite cyclists are intensifying preparations ahead of the National Track Championships, a decisive event that will shape the country’s team for the 2026 African Track and Para-Track Cycling Championships.
With Abuja set to host the continental tournament, the pressure is mounting on athletes to deliver top performances.
Velodrome to Host Continental Action
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome will serve as the venue for both the national trials and the continental event.
Competitions will begin with Para-Track events from 9 to 11 May , before the main Track Championships take centre stage from 13 to 17 May.
The schedule reflects a growing emphasis on inclusivity while maintaining high standards of competition.
Merit-Based Selection in Focus
Cyclists are currently undergoing intensive training programmes, with coaches and officials closely monitoring performance metrics.
The selection process prioritises merit, with athletes required to demonstrate consistency, endurance, and tactical awareness under competitive conditions.
Only the most outstanding performers will earn the opportunity to represent Nigeria on home soil.
Building a Competitive National Team
The National Sports Commission and the Cycling Federation of Nigeria are collaborating to ensure a well-prepared national team.
Their goal is not only to field participants but to assemble a squad capable of competing strongly against Africa’s best.
As preparations intensify, the National Track Championships will serve as both a proving ground and a gateway to continental recognition for Nigeria’s cycling talents.
