Workers’ Hardship Unacceptable, NLC Tells Government At Easter

Labour Calls for Compassionate Leadership
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerian leaders to embrace a more humane and people-oriented style of governance, urging authorities to prioritise the welfare of workers and the general populace.
In its Easter message titled “This Easter: A Cross For Liberty!”, signed by its President, Joe Ajaero, the labour body stressed that leadership must reflect sacrifice, empathy, and service, in line with the spiritual lessons of the season.
Criticism of Policies and Governance Approach
The NLC criticised what it described as the misuse of state power to suppress workers’ rights and silence dissent, warning that such actions contradict the essence of leadership.
It also condemned austerity-driven policies that disproportionately affect ordinary Nigerians while benefiting a privileged minority, describing them as unjust and unsustainable.
“Governance must not be reduced to an avenue for personal enrichment,” the statement noted, urging leaders to see public office as a platform for service rather than accumulation of wealth.
Economic Hardship and Workers’ Burden
Highlighting the daily struggles of workers, the congress pointed to rising transportation costs as a major concern, noting that it continues to erode wages and worsen living conditions.
The group also decried the persistent electricity crisis, describing it as a major barrier to economic productivity and dignified living.
According to the NLC, poor power supply has crippled industries, weakened small businesses, and placed additional strain on households already grappling with rising costs.
Easter Message: A Call for Reform
Drawing parallels with the Christian message of Easter, the labour union urged leaders to reflect on the symbolism of sacrifice and redemption.
It called on government to deploy its authority to tackle pressing challenges such as poverty, insecurity, and infrastructure deficits.
“The power of leadership must be used to liberate, not oppress,” the congress stated, adding that policies should serve as instruments of progress and social justice.
Demand for Immediate Action
The NLC urged the government to implement practical solutions, including improvements in public transportation, stabilisation of electricity supply, and enhanced security across the country.
It warned that the current level of hardship faced by workers is unsustainable, stressing the need for urgent reforms that place citizens at the centre of governance.
