Delta Evacuates UNIJOS Students Amid Plateau Crisis

Swift Government Response to Security Crisis
THE Delta State Government has evacuated at least 34 students of the University of Jos following renewed security concerns in Plateau State, reinforcing its commitment to student safety.
The evacuation was triggered by the temporary closure of the university amid escalating violence in Jos and surrounding communities. Authorities described the move as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting students of Delta origin caught in the unfolding crisis.
Speaking during the reception of the returning students, Chief Sunday Onoriode, the State Director of Protocol, commended the prompt intervention approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Coordinated Evacuation Efforts
According to officials, the operation was carefully coordinated by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Comrade Ezekiel Okoh, in collaboration with transport operators and other stakeholders.
Onoriode noted that the safe return of the students underscored the effectiveness of proactive governance and crisis management.
“It is an unusual time for Nigeria, especially in that region, but we remain hopeful that peace will return,” he said, urging the students to use the Easter break to recuperate.
Students Recount Difficult Journey
The evacuation process was not without challenges. Movement restrictions, including curfews, complicated logistics, making the operation both delicate and time-sensitive.
Comrade Newton Miracle, Vice President of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), UNIJOS chapter, described the evacuation as “timely but demanding.”
“It wasn’t easy moving under curfew conditions, but we are grateful that our safety was prioritised,” he said, praising the government’s responsiveness.
Reassurance and Call for Calm
The state government has reassured students of its continued support, promising to facilitate their return to school once normalcy is restored.
Officials also urged students to remain law-abiding and focused on their academic goals despite the disruption.
The evacuation highlights growing concerns over security in Plateau State, while also reflecting increasing expectations for state governments to safeguard their citizens beyond their territorial boundaries.
