Oborevwori Prioritising Governance Over Politics, Says Commissioner

Delta Government Moves to Shield Governance from Political Distractions
THE Delta State Government has assured residents that governance will remain uninterrupted despite the build-up to the 2027 general elections, with measures already in place to prevent political activities from affecting service delivery.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, gave the assurance during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise TV, where he outlined steps taken by the administration of Sheriff Oborevwori to maintain governance focus.
Resignation Directive to Ensure Fairness
A key measure, Aniagwu explained, is the directive requiring all political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to resign from their current roles.
He said the move aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, which mandates public office holders to step down before contesting elections.
According to him, the directive is aimed at creating a level playing field by preventing appointees from using state resources or the advantages of office to influence electoral outcomes.
“The law is very clear. If you are holding an appointive position and intend to contest, you must step aside,” he said.
Reducing Distractions in Public Service
Beyond fairness, the commissioner stressed that the policy is designed to eliminate distractions that often arise when public officials combine governance duties with political ambitions.
He noted that such dual engagement could lead to neglect of official responsibilities, adding that the governor is determined to ensure that public service remains the primary focus of all appointees.
Commitment to Project Delivery
Aniagwu also highlighted ongoing development efforts, revealing that the state recently approved over ₦400 billion worth of capital projects, many of which are already being processed for execution.
He said contractors have received up to 40 percent mobilisation payments to ensure timely delivery, while several projects are lined up for commissioning as the administration approaches its third anniversary.
According to him, the governor has made it clear that governance activities—including project inspection and commissioning—will take precedence even on days scheduled for political engagements.
Political Stability and Inclusiveness
On internal party matters, Aniagwu said the administration has fostered inclusiveness and stability following recent political realignments in the state.
He attributed this to transparent conduct of party congresses at ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, which he said helped build confidence among stakeholders.
Assurance to Residents
Reaffirming the administration’s commitment, Aniagwu maintained that the governor’s leadership style—focused on prudent resource management and infrastructure delivery—would ensure continuity in governance.
He added that residents would continue to benefit from ongoing development initiatives regardless of political activities in the state.
