Free Transport Boosts Turnout At Enugu Trade Fair

ECCIMA Initiative Drives Attendance at Trade Fair
SHOPPERS and exhibitors at the ongoing 37th Enugu International Trade Fair have commended the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture for introducing free transportation to and from the event, a move widely credited with boosting attendance and sales.
The initiative comes amid rising transport costs linked to recent fuel price increases, which have significantly affected mobility within Enugu and beyond.
Relief for Shoppers Amid Rising Costs
Many visitors described the free bus service as a major financial relief. A shopper, Nonye Madu, who resides along Agbani Road, said the initiative saved her an estimated ₦4,000 in transport fares.
She noted that transport costs have doubled within a year, rising from about ₦2,000 to ₦4,000 for a return trip within the metropolis.
Another attendee, John Ezeh from Abakpa, said the free rides enabled him to allocate more funds toward purchases at the fair, adding that the initiative likely prevented a decline in attendance.
Exhibitors Report Increased Patronage
Exhibitors also reported positive outcomes from the initiative. Greg Ibeano, who operates a stand at the fair, said the availability of free buses from locations such as Emene made daily participation easier and more efficient.
According to him, the initiative has not only increased visitor turnout but also translated into higher sales for businesses.
“This is the first time I am seeing such an initiative at trade fairs across the country,” he said, noting its impact on both attendance and commercial activity.
Strategic Planning Behind Initiative
Responding to the feedback, ECCIMA Director-General, Uche Mba, described the free transport scheme as one of the most impactful decisions taken by the Chamber’s leadership, headed by Nnanyelugo Onyemelukwe.
He explained that buses were stationed at major transit points including Garriki, Abakpa, Emene, Polo Park, and Holy Ghost bus stops to ensure accessibility to the fairgrounds, located on the outskirts of the city.
Supporting MSMEs and Economic Participation
Mba noted that the initiative aligns with the fair’s theme: “Empowering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for Global Competitiveness.”
By easing transportation challenges, ECCIMA aims to encourage greater participation, enhance business visibility, and stimulate economic activity within the region.
Positive Feedback Continues
Organisers say they have received widespread commendation from users of the service, with many describing it as a timely intervention in a challenging economic environment.
Observers believe the initiative could set a new standard for trade fair organisation in Nigeria, particularly in addressing accessibility and affordability concerns.
