INEC Orders Parties To Submit Membership Registers 21 Days Before Primaries

INEC Revises Timetable for Party Primaries Ahead of 2027 Elections
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed political parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries for the 2027 general elections, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The adjustment follows consultations and concerns raised by political parties over the earlier timeline, which had initially set 1st to 21st April 2026, as the submission window.
New Timeline Aligns With Electoral Law
In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the revised schedule was necessary to ensure full compliance with statutory requirements governing party primaries.
According to INEC, political parties are now permitted to conduct their primaries within the approved window of 23 April to 30 May 2026, provided they adhere strictly to the requirement of submitting membership registers at least 21 days before their chosen dates.
The Commission emphasised that the submission of updated membership registers remains a legal prerequisite for validating internal party processes.
Deadline Adjusted to 10th May
INEC further clarified that the final deadline for submission of membership registers has now been extended to 10 May 2026, replacing the earlier 21st April deadline.
“The register of party members must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the holding of their respective primaries,” the Commission stated.
This adjustment, according to the electoral body, is intended to ensure that all parties operate within the framework of the law while allowing sufficient time for verification and monitoring.
Strengthening Internal Democracy
The Commission explained that the revised directive is aimed at strengthening transparency in party primaries, improving oversight, and reducing disputes arising from irregular nomination processes.
By insisting on verified membership registers, INEC hopes to curb manipulation of delegate lists and reinforce internal democracy within political parties.
Call for Compliance
INEC urged all registered political parties to strictly comply with the new timetable, warning that adherence is essential to ensuring a smooth electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting credible elections while ensuring that all parties operate on a level playing field.
