DESOPADEC Counters ‘School Is Scam’ Narrative In Warri North

DESOPADEC Intensifies Youth Sensitisation in Delta
THE Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission has stepped up efforts to counter the growing “school is scam” narrative among youths, extending its sensitisation campaign to students in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The initiative, part of the Commission’s monthly enlightenment programme, was held at Iwere College on 26 March 2026, with a focus on promoting the value of education alongside warnings against drug abuse and cultism.
School Authorities, Officials Back Initiative
Speaking at the event, Vice Principal Mrs. Uwelem Francisca, representing the school’s principal, commended the leadership of DESOPADEC for what she described as a timely intervention.
She specifically acknowledged the roles of Board Chairman, John Nani, and Managing Director, Festus Ochonogor, noting that the campaign addresses a dangerous misconception among young people.
Francisca emphasised that education remains central to intellectual development and societal progress, urging students to remain focused on their academic pursuits.
Debate Highlights Value of Education
A key feature of the programme was a debate session involving students from Iwere College and Christ the Saviour International School on the topic, “School Is Scam.”
Participants overwhelmingly argued against the notion, presenting education as a critical pathway to personal growth and national development.
One of the debaters, Best Oritsematosan, described education as indispensable for success, while another participant, Grace Agbeyigbe, acknowledged that governance challenges have contributed to the negative perception among youths.
Experts Warn Against Social Vices
Delivering a lecture, Ms. Honeywell Eburajolo outlined the importance of education in shaping responsible citizens, identifying formal, informal, and non-formal education as essential components of human development.
In a related session, Ms. Elizabeth Odisu cautioned students against drug abuse and cultism, warning that negative peer influence could have long-term consequences on their future.
Broader Youth Engagement Strategy
The programme also featured participation from multiple schools, including Christian World College, Beach Secondary School, and St. Michael College, reflecting DESOPADEC’s broader youth engagement strategy.
The campaign aligns with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and continues to serve as a platform for addressing critical social issues affecting young people.
The event concluded with the presentation of gift items to outstanding debate participants, reinforcing the importance of intellectual engagement among students.
