New Electricity Regulators’ Forum Targets Unified Tariffs, Better Oversight
Forum Launched to Strengthen Electricity Governance
IN a move aimed at improving electricity governance in Nigeria, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has inaugurated the Forum of Nigerian Electricity Regulators (FONER).
The launch took place during a high-level regulatory meeting in Lagos involving State Electricity Regulators, marking a new phase in efforts to coordinate oversight across the sector.
Responding to Sector Reforms
According to NERC Chairman, Musiliu Oseni, the creation of FONER reflects the realities of Nigeria’s decentralised electricity framework under the Electricity Act 2023.
He noted that as states assume greater roles in electricity regulation, a unified platform is necessary to ensure consistency and prevent policy fragmentation.
Focus on Harmonisation and Accountability
The forum is designed to align regulatory approaches in key areas such as tariff setting, market operations, and consumer protection.
It will also function as a platform for consultation on reforms, while promoting transparency, accountability, and adherence to national benchmarks.
In addition, FONER aims to strengthen institutional capacity through knowledge-sharing and peer-learning among regulators.
Structure and Leadership
The forum’s leadership includes Oseni as Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo as Vice Chairman, and Aisha Mahmud as Secretary.
Participants at the meeting also reviewed past regulatory actions and formally adopted the FONER Charter, setting the tone for future engagements.
