Police Arrest Village Head Over Alleged Illegal Firearm Possession
THE Police Command in Akwa Ibom State has detained the village head of Asik Ubofa in Effiat Clan, Mbo Local Government Area, over alleged unlawful possession of a firearm.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Wednesday.
According to her, the arrest followed credible intelligence indicating that the traditional leader was in possession of an illegal weapon.
Firearm Recovered in Operation
John said the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, ordered a coordinated operation to verify the intelligence.
“Operatives stormed the suspect’s residence on Tuesday and recovered one AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines,” she stated.
The suspect has since been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Investigation Ongoing
The police said the probe would focus on identifying the source of the firearm, the suspect’s intent, and any possible accomplices linked to the case.
John reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling illegal arms possession across the state.
She also urged residents to voluntarily surrender unlawful weapons or risk prosecution.
Call for Public Cooperation
The police spokesperson commended members of the public for providing useful information and encouraged continued collaboration with security agencies.
