Police Record Breakthrough in Crime Fight
THE Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested four suspects, including a 70-year-old man, over alleged involvement in attempted murder and cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.
The suspects—Okon Akpan (70), John Samson (45), Emmanuel Asuquo (50), and Idorenyin Umoh (22)—were apprehended on 20 March 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village following what police described as a targeted intelligence-led operation.
Intelligence-Led Operation
Police spokesperson Timfon John said the arrests were made after authorities received credible intelligence linked to a petition alleging attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult activities in the area.
According to the statement, detectives acted swiftly, executing the operation with “precision and professionalism,” leading to the capture of the suspects.
Weapons Recovered
During the operation, security operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns from the suspects, strengthening suspicions of their involvement in violent crimes.
Authorities believe the seized weapons may have been used in previous criminal activities, although investigations are ongoing to establish the full scope of their operations.
Manhunt for Other Suspects
The police said efforts are underway to track down other members of the suspected criminal network believed to be operating within the community.
Residents have been assured that the situation remains under control, with proactive measures in place to prevent any escalation of violence.
Call for Public Cooperation
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
He urged residents to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
