The appointment letter was presented to the professor by the Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Nyerhovwo Tonukari, who described the development as an important milestone in the institution’s growth.
Tonukari urged the new vice chancellor to utilise his extensive academic and administrative experience to enhance the university’s research culture and academic standards.
Government’s Vision for Higher Education
According to the commissioner, the appointment reflects the determination of the Delta State government to strengthen higher education institutions by placing them under capable academic leadership.
He emphasised that universities require visionary leaders who understand both the demands of modern scholarship and the administrative complexities of higher education.
Tonukari noted that the state government remains committed to ensuring that its universities maintain strong academic standards and global relevance.
A Career Built on Scholarship
Professor Aghalino, who hails from Owhelogbo in Isoko North Local Government Area, currently teaches History at the University of Ilorin.
Over nearly three decades, he has developed a reputation as a respected scholar and public intellectual within Nigeria’s academic community.
He began his career at the University of Ilorin in the mid-1990s and rose steadily through the academic ranks, eventually attaining the position of Professor of History.

His research has examined the relationship between resource extraction, environmental challenges and economic development in oil-producing areas.
One of his notable works, Oil Exploitation in the Western Niger Delta: A Cost-Benefit Analysis, 1956–1995, remains an influential contribution to scholarly discussions on resource governance and development in Nigeria.
His research has enriched policy debates on environmental justice, sustainable development and the political economy of oil.
International Recognition and Policy Engagement
In addition to his academic work, Professor Aghalino has participated in international conferences and research collaborations across several countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and Kenya.
These engagements have helped place his work within broader global conversations about resource management and regional development.
