Oborevwori Inaugurates Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Management Faculties At UNIDEL Owa-Alero

DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday commissioned major academic facilities at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Owa-Alero Campus, in Ika North-East Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education.
The newly inaugurated facilities include the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex—named after the Governor—along with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building, Faculty of Engineering lecture halls and workshops, a 500-seater central auditorium, and a fully equipped central library.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori described the event as a “harvest of projects,” saying the new structures reflect his administration’s determination to deliver world-class learning environments across all state-owned institutions.
He noted that while his government is widely acknowledged for visible road and bridge projects, equal attention is being given to the education and health sectors.
“Education remains the most powerful tool for transformation. These facilities are built to global standards to promote innovation, research, entrepreneurship and practical skills,” he said.
The Governor urged students to use the facilities responsibly and avoid vandalism, stressing that discipline and creativity are essential for success in today’s knowledge-driven world.
Oborevwori also recalled his role in establishing UNIDEL and two other state universities during his time as Speaker of the State House of Assembly. He said the decision was driven by the limited admission quota previously allotted to Delta State University, Abraka, which left tens of thousands of qualified applicants without placement.
At the event, former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa praised Oborevwori’s sustained investment in the higher education sector, noting that the continuity in policy and development has helped grow UNIDEL’s student population to about 15,000.
Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, highlighted key features of the newly opened facilities. The Sheriff Oborevwori Complex houses a 250-seat auditorium, lecture rooms, offices, a student resource centre and media utilities.
The Faculty of Environmental Sciences facility includes two 250-seater auditoriums, four 80-capacity classrooms, studios, staff offices, and meeting rooms.
The engineering complex features fully equipped workshops for metalwork, carpentry, mechanics, foundry and welding, alongside a 200-capacity studio. The central library accommodates 426 students.
Vice-Chancellor of UNIDEL, Prof. Stella Chiemeke, described the projects as a significant boost to the university’s capacity to train skilled professionals across key sectors.
“You are not just constructing buildings; you are constructing the future of Delta State,” she said, while announcing that the Management and Social Sciences Complex had been named after the Governor in recognition of his contributions to educational development.
Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, commended the projects as a demonstration of the Governor’s commitment to balanced development under the MORE Agenda.
